The 5th installment of my Tucson Tales series highlights the Tucson Rodeo, known as “La Fiesta de los Vaqueros” (The Celebration of the Cowboys). The Rodeo was started in 1925 as a way to bring more tourism to town during the winter season. It began as a 3-day competition but has now evolved to be a 9-day event. Each year the rodeo kicks off with a parade which has become the longest non-motorized parade in the world. Tucson is also the only metro area that closes schools during its rodeo week in order to promote local participation. The Tucson Rodeo was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2008 and in 2024 it was ranked 9th out of the top 10 rodeos in the United States by USA Today Magazine.

If you’re unfamiliar with my Tucson Tales series, it’s a project dedicated to combining my love of Tucson with my love of comic books. Each “issue cover” highlights a different landmark of local lore. My goal for this project is to spread awareness of the parts of Tucson that help make this city strange and special besides our majestic desert landscape.
